Attention-Completion Strategies

Below is a checklist of questions that will be used to help you identify relevant strategies you can use to address the issue(s) you have identified.
  1. Read each question and check either the Yes box or the No box for each question.
  2. After answering all questions, click the Suggest strategies button at the bottom. All questions need to be answered in order to have strategies suggested.
  3. Your answers will be used to show you relevant categories of strategies, both foundation and more intensive strategies.

Questions

  • Are you sure the student can complete all steps in the task independently?
  • Does the student attempt the task but is still unable to complete some steps correctly?
  • Has the student completed all steps in the task independently previously?
  • Does the student appear to be frustrated with elements of the task?
  • Does the student often rely on peers?
  • Does the student complete some tasks independently but struggle with others?
  • Does student typically make a lot of mistakes in their work?
  • Does the student struggle with tasks that others in the class complete quickly and accurately?
  • Does the student spend excessive time getting ready to start a task?
  • Is the student constantly delayed because they need to organise or borrow needed materials?
  • Does the student frequently arrive at class without the materials they need?
  • Does the student frequently stop working and fail to seek assistance when they need help?
  • Can the student identify steps necessary to complete a task?
  • Does the student start the task but then stop and/or engage in off task behaviour?
  • Does the student stop working if close supervision or prompting are withdrawn?
  • Does the student engage with tasks for only short periods of time?
  • Does the student lose interest in tasks quickly?
  • Does the student often ask the teacher, or other students, about what they are supposed to do?
  • Do you frequently have to repeat instructions to the student?
  • Do you frequently have to repeat instructions to whole class?
  • Does the student seem to have difficulty with multistep directions?
  • Does the student frequently forget what to do?
  • Does the student often have difficulty starting?
  • Does the student appear to be easily distracted by events or sounds in the classroom?
  • Does the student tend to talk to others when they should be working independently?
  • Do particular sounds, visual or other stimuli seem to distress or annoy the student?
  • Is the student easily distracted by others?
  • Does the student fidget or leave their seat a lot?
  • Will the student complete tasks if given much more time than peers?
  • Does the student work excessively slowly compared to peers?
  • Is the student hampered by very slow handwriting?
  • Is the student hampered by very slow reading?
  • Could the student complete the task if they were allowed to do it in a different way (e.g. oral presentation rather than writing)?
  • Would the student complete the task if it related to a topic of interest?
